We conducted our own survey as part of our quantitative data collection method. We targeted this at university students who live in central suburbs* of Auckland. We collected 61 responses.
Transport to and from University:
59% people said that they currently go by bus to from university. Surprisingly walking was the second most popular choice with 42.6%. This helps us as more people are currently walking so hopefully would be willing to participate in our final design outcome.
Motivator/Barriers:We also asked in our survey what are the reasons people walk to university? (motivation) and what are the reasons they do not walk to university (barriers).
Motivation:
We found the biggest motivator to this group of people to walk was that it is the cheapest alternative with 59%. Then health and fitness with 42.8%.
We will focus on these in our design outcomes as it would hopefully mean we can motivate more people to walk if we can provide these reasons.
Barriers:
The biggest barrier to people who answered our survey was that it takes up to much time with 59%. Then unpredictable weather with 47.5%.
We can not really change these barriers but if we provide more motivators so the good outweighs the bad then hopefully more people will walk.
Preferred Methods to Receive Information:
We then asked our participants which form of media they prefer to receive information from.
Most people prefer Social Media, 78.7%. Then Websites 4.1%. Printed media and Apps were preferred both with 27.9%.
This helps us to understand what design outcomes we should be providing to tackle the problem.
From our survey results we are looking at doing a Social Media Campaign, Poster Series and Mobile App.
Time spent on phone a day: We also asked how much time our survey participants spend on their phone a day. This also helped us to understand what design outcomes we should be using. More than 75.4% of people spend more than 3 hours on their phone a day.
This helped us to decide to do a mobile app and social media campaign as these are used on mobile phones.
