ABSTRACT & INTRODUCTION

Abstract

This is a research project developed by Communication Design students’ from AUT South Campus and it aims develop and prototype a design solution for the Auckland Council 2050 development plan.  This research project adopted a pragmatic paradigm under a post-positivist epistemology where the main goal was how our design skills could contribute to influencing our target audience lifestyle and might positively impact future generations. In this sense, the project employed a range of mixed methods such as quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to have a deeper understand of the audience it is planned to influence.

The project employed the Design Thinking framework including; qualitative, quantitative data collection and analysis. The findings were used to ideate and prototype a design solution capable to produce a positive influence in the target audience.

Introduction

Our design research team is taking one of the six outcomes of the long term Auckland Council 2050 spatial plan. We will be considering some of the challenges including; increasing population growth, environmental deterioration, and the quality of life in Auckland. We thought it would interesting to focus walking as a form of transportation. Sectioning this target audience to those that live roughly up to 45 minutes away from their university.
