PROBLEM & CONTEXT

Auckland Council 2050 plan aims to improve transport and access by creating enjoyable living through easy, reliable, and safe sustainable means of transport. To make this research possible we choose a focus area from the Auckland Council 2050 Plan,‘Make walking cycling and public transport preferred choices for many Aucklander.

To make this study more relatable to us as university students we thought it could be interesting to focus on only students and how they get to university. We also decided to also only focus on one physical means of transport, walking, and how we can encourage it in a geographical area. We refined our geographic area in these central suburbs being confined to Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Grey Lynn, Grafton, New Market, Epsom, Arch Hill, Eden Terrace, St Marys Bay, Parnell, Freemans Bay, Newton. We found these suburbs currently face a variety of small problems including; road congestion, health and wellbeing, safety, expensive parking, crowded car parks and street parking, public transport reliabilities, inconsistencies in travel time on the roads.
In this research study we want to find out why the students in the geographic area do or do not walk to university. So we can understand how we can encourage and create a solution that can help improve the problems within these suburbs and transport around Auckland.o

Global problems and consequences for future generations from the lifestyles we live are polluting our environment and warming our earth.

Global Warmingmeans rising sea levels, poor Conditions to grow crops > leading to starvation and a global crisis. If we can make walking “the norm” now in areas where it is practical this can have an impact on future generations attitude towards walking as a form of transportation.
