App: Commentary of practice
Ideation:
When developing we were also in the process of creating a style and colour scheme that reflected our brands identity. Originally we liked using bold and bright colours and thought this would make our app more appealing to our target audience by making it seem fun and exciting.
We also explored using gradients and tested out different combinations but found it was quite hard to create a smooth gradient and only similar colour hues could create a smooth gradient e.g (orange and pink, blue and green). This made it very restricting to our colour palette and creating a brand identity.
Prototypes:
We explored different areas of the app using the pink and orange gradient and developed our starting point at user interfaces. We found it challenging to create functional app interfaces with the gradient and chosen colour palette. The app didn’t look like a functional everyday app and contradicted our whole concept as a brand. We wanted our users to be able to use this app everyday.
Tests:
With some feedback and help from our tutors mentioning how using softer colours on smaller screens and app interfaces helps the user to look at a smaller screen for longer.
We decided to step back and start again with our colour palette and remove the gradient. We decided to test out using solid soft colours instead.
Refinements:
We knew that if we could find two solid colours that worked well to give the app a functional look we could adapt this to our brand identity. We ended up going with a bold saturated green and with a soft light blue. The colours contrasted well which helped to create further app interfaces easier and quicker. Using the softer blue on majority of the app screen achieved a softer look for users to look at for longer.
